2023-2024

I address the intersection of chronic illness, natural selection, and the taxidermic process by depicting animals with limitations that put them at risk or led to fatality. I experience the process of taxidermy as an overlap of art and medicine, involving acts of care and preservation for a body between life, death, and the appearance of life again. My interest in early deaths stems from my experience and struggle to manage my chronic illness. Biologically, I am an animal that was programmed to die young, my persisting breath is a defiance of what nature intended for me. I will always owe my life to consistent access to medical care, which most animals do not have. The hypothetical my work explores is that of being an unassisted animal which gives me a unique appreciation for my human privilege and a profound sorrow for all those that lack it.
